Pop star Jessie J is speaking candidly about her fight with breast cancer — and the raw emotions that have come with it.
In a heartfelt interview with The Sunday Times, the 37-year-old singer described the deeply personal moments she’s shared with her family since her diagnosis.
“The other night, my mum was massaging my boob for me, because I can’t touch the scars,” Jessie recalled. “I just started sobbing, saying, ‘I can’t believe this has happened.’ She told me, ‘I wish it was me,’ and then we were both crying… I’m just so glad it’s not her.”
Earlier this year, doctors found a cancerous tumor in the Masterpiece singer’s breast. Jessie underwent a mastectomy, and tests showed that the surrounding tissue — called the margins — was free of cancer cells. That news brought some relief, but she knows the journey isn’t over.
“People think that once you’ve got the all-clear, it’s done,” she explained. “But I’ve got another surgery and I still need to heal. I have to figure out the rest of this year.” She added that there’s still “a one in two chance” the cancer could return.
Back in June, Jessie shared the news of her early-stage breast cancer diagnosis in an emotional Instagram video. She revealed plans to have a double mastectomy to reduce the risk of the cancer coming back.
Not long after her first surgery, Jessie was hospitalized for blood clot symptoms. Thankfully, scans ruled out anything serious. Doctors treated her for an infection, and she was able to return home with medication.
Now, she’s focusing on her recovery and preparing for reconstructive surgery, which will reshape her breast after the mastectomy.
Through it all, Jessie has been open with her fans — turning her personal battle into a reminder of the importance of early detection, treatment, and emotional support.
